Introduction

Institute of Human Rights Education (IHRE)

The Institute of Human Rights Education (IHRE), headquartered in Madurai, Tamilnadu was setup with the vision of building human rights culture in our society through education. An experiment started in 1997 in a few schools of Tamilnadu during the UN Decade for Human Rights Education (1995-2004) has expanded to a National Programme of significance. Today it is part of the United Nations World Programme for Human Rights Education.

The World Programme for Human Rights Education (2005-2009) was launched by the United Nations making it obligatory for the States and Civil Society Organizations to introduce Human Rights Education in the school system. In pursuance of the UN objectives, the IHRE has initiated a National Programme for Human Rights Education in India from 2005.

The programme was confined to Tamilnadu from 1997 to 2005, offered mainly in about 300 Adi Dravida Welfare schools run by the Govt. of Tamilnadu and about 250 aided and private schools. Since, 2005 it has expanded to other states - Orissa, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Tripura, Bihar, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharastra, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Manipur and Nagaland.

Currently the programme is on with 4476 trained teachers in 3909 schools involving 316832 children. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and National Human Rights Commission have commended the work and appreciated IHRE for introducing such programme.
